Pip’s Tips · human training

How do I train my human?

According to Pip, a well-trained human is predictable, attentive and comfortably early with dinner.

Pip gives her human a meaningful look

“Start with prolonged staring. If that does not work, sit demonstratively beside the food bowl. Only meow once you are certain your human is in a video call.” — Pip

What Pip is actually trying to tell you

Cats quickly learn which signals produce results. If meowing, scratching or jumping onto the counter immediately earns food or attention, that behaviour is unintentionally rewarded.

  • Reward calm behaviour and offer attention before Pip needs to demand it loudly.
  • Use consistent routines without making them predictable to the exact minute.
  • Try a food puzzle or automatic feeder if early waking has become a habit.
  • Do not punish: it causes stress and does not teach your cat which behaviour is wanted.

When is meowing not human training?

A clear change in behaviour, calling at night, increased hunger, weight loss, restlessness or increased drinking may also indicate pain or illness. Have your cat examined, particularly if she is older.
