Pip’s Tips · travel
Leave the carrier out
If the carrier only appears before something stressful, your cat will understand the message very quickly.

“The secret tunnel is back. Suspicious. I am leaving for underneath the bed.” — Pip
From alarm signal to safe place
Make the carrier part of the normal furnishings so that it does not exclusively predict a veterinary visit.
- Choose a sturdy carrier with a removable top.
- Leave it open with a familiar blanket and an occasional treat inside.
- Practise calmly with closing the door, lifting the carrier and taking short car journeys.
- Support the carrier from underneath and consider covering it partially.
Ask for help in good time
For severe anxiety, your veterinarian may recommend medication before travel. Test it according to their instructions before the actual appointment.
