Pip’s Tips · scratching

The sofa is also a scratching post

At least it is when your human buys a beautiful scratching post and puts it in a completely illogical place.

Pip stretches out on her favourite place

“I do not scratch the sofa to be annoying. I scratch there because the sofa is exactly where my message will be read.” — Pip

Scratching is part of being a cat

Cats scratch to maintain their claws, stretch their muscles and mark a place both visibly and through scent. It is normal behaviour, not revenge. A scratching surface works best when it suits the cat’s preference and is positioned somewhere relevant.

Many cats like to scratch after sleeping, near a passageway or close to an important resting place. Some cats prefer vertical scratching; others choose a horizontal cardboard surface.

How the scratching post can beat the sofa

  • Initially place the scratching surface directly beside the location your cat already uses.
  • Choose a stable model that does not wobble and is long enough for a full stretch.
  • Offer different materials and orientations.
  • Calmly reward spontaneous use; do not force your cat.
  • Protect the sofa temporarily while the better option becomes a habit.

Suddenly scratching much more?

A clear behavioural change can accompany stress or changes in the home. Consider resting places, other cats, visitors and available resources. Punishment increases stress and does not solve the cause.
